    About us

SqwidNet launched in November 2016 as the licensed SIGFOX operator in South Africa. The SqwidNet network offers low-cost access to IoT solutions and operators in South Africa, creating opportunities for businesses small and large to create innovative solutions.

SqwidNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of DFA, the premier open-access fibre connectivity provider.

The SqwidNet network will give nationwide coverage for the Internet of Things allowing millions of sensors and devices to send small packets of data, for analysis, immediate action, and record keeping. The network will span the entire country by 2018.

    SIGFOX technology

SIGFOX gives a voice to the physical world, thanks to a dedicated network. At least three base stations service each section of the coverage area, and every message is sent in triplicate to ensure that every device has a reliable and secure connection. The service focuses on:

    • Simplicity: No configuration, no connection, no signaling
    • Autonomy: Very low energy consumption, allowing years of autonomy on battery without maintenance
    • Small messages: No large assets or multimedia, only small messages

There is no signaling, nor negotiation, between a device and a receiving station. The device decides when to send its message, picking up a pseudo-random frequency. It’s up to the network to detect the incoming messages, as well as validate and deduplicate them. The message is then available in the SIGFOX cloud, and forwarded to any third party cloud platform chosen by the user.

Messages can be sent to devices well. However, for energy efficiency reasons, every communication is instigated by the device. This means that the device is not passively listening for possible incoming data, but stays idle more than 99% of the time. A device can ask for an update from a network. Then it will go back to sleep for 20 seconds, before starting to listen to a specific frequency for a response.

Every message is signed, with information specific to the device (incl. a unique private key) and to the message itself. This prevents spoofing, alteration, or replay of genuine messages.

Encryption and scrambling of the data are supported.
